Nit-Nem: The Daily Discipline of Sikhism,

This page contains Nitnem PDF with Meaning in Punjabi and English.
Nit-Nem or Nitnem is the term for the collection of sacred scriptures that Sikhs recite daily as part of their spiritual discipline. These prayers are prescribed for morning, evening, and night and are central to Sikh practice. The Banis (hymns) included in Nit-Nem are selected from the Guru Granth Sahib, the central holy scripture of Sikhism, and the Dassam Granth, written by the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.

The Guru Granth Sahib contains hymns composed by six of the ten Sikh Gurus: Guru Nanak Dev, Guru Angad Dev, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjun Dev, and Guru Tegh Bahadur. However, the standard Nit-Nem established by the Sikh community features Banis by only five Gurus: Guru Nanak Dev, Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjun Dev, and Guru Gobind Singh. It excludes contributions from Bhagats, Bhatts, and others whose writings are also part of the Guru Granth Sahib. Additionally, the second Guru (Guru Angad Dev) and ninth Guru (Guru Tegh Bahadur) are not represented in Nit-Nem, and the sixth, seventh, and eighth Gurus did not compose Banis.

Despite the limited selection, all scriptures in the Guru Granth Sahib are considered equally sacred and authoritative. Their inclusion in the Guru Granth Sahib elevates them to the status of Gurbani (God’s word), regardless of the original author. Nit-Nem’s structure may reflect practicality or tradition rather than a distinction in spiritual value.

Romanization Challenges
Transliterating Gurbani into Roman script is difficult due to its complex phonetics and grammatical structure. Efforts to create a phonetic approximation in Roman letters aim to make the scriptures accessible to non-Gurmukhi readers. However, English’s context-sensitive spelling system cannot fully capture the original Gurmukhi’s precise sounds.

Ultimately, Nit-Nem underscores the unity of Sikh scripture, emphasizing daily connection to divine wisdom through disciplined recitation.
